Somerset Wildlands – aim to develop a network of “stepping stone” sites

Published 21.5.21

The Somerset Levels in South-West England were once a vast wild wetland, home to pelicans, lynx, beavers and sturgeons.  Where once it teemed with wildlife, sadly now its wildlife is vastly depleted through human activities.  At We Have the POWER we love innovation as much as we love rewilding and so we’re delighted to support Somerset Wildlands’ cutting edge approach to distributed rewilding.

Somerset Wildlands aim to develop a network of “stepping stone” sites throughout the Levels – small and large – by buying plots of land as they become available. Each site will be managed in as light-touch a way as is practical, with acquiring more stepping stones the absolute priority. In contrast to older style interventionist conservation, so far as possible nature will lead the way.   Their aim is that over time this will create numerous ‘islands of wildness’ – providing refuges and diversity within the overall landscape.
