An emergency like no other – legal action

Published 18.2.21

Six Portuguese young people are on the cusp of securing a legally binding judgment from the European Court of Human Rights compelling 33 European countries (including the UK) to adopt the radical climate measures required to secure their futures and ours.

The charity Global Legal Action Network (GLAN) supported the filing of this case in September 2020 and within two months the Court announced it was fast-tracking this climate case due to the “urgency and importance of the issues raised”. GLAN is now bracing itself to receive responses from the 33 countries’ legal teams and is in desperate need of funding to meet this enormous challenge. That’s why We Have The POWER are supporting GLAN in its fantastic work and is urging other funders to do the same.

The six young people in Portugal are already experiencing record-breaking heatwaves and forest fires on a scale never seen before. Without urgent measures to keep fossil fuels in the ground, their generation faces a future dominated by deadly weather extremes. By taking this case, they are adding their voices to the global fight for #climatejustice.

If you can please help fund GLAN to secure the ground-breaking judgment that is now within reach. Funds will go towards staff & operational costs and scientific evidence.
